When I travel, something I'm currently doing, I prefer to bring magazines than books. Trouble is magazines weigh down my already loaded bag. Zinio – 5,000+ Digital Magazines is an app that can solve this problem. Like its title says, you can pick from over 5,000 magazines in the app including big names like Wired, Fast Company, Newsweek, National Geographic, Consumer Reports and Maxim. From what I can gather there are several ways to purchase a magazine - you can pick up an individual issue for a few bucks, you can subscribe to the magazine or you can get what they call the Z-Pass. The Z-Pass will give you access to 3 magazines a month for $5 and on their website it says you'll get a one month free trial. It's a pretty simple proposition - read magazines on your iPad or iPhone - so there's not much else to say. But it certainly looks like an easier way to have your favorite mag on the plane and with a 76 AppScore the pro reviews seem to agree. I'd say it's at least worth the free one month Z-Pass trial on your next trip. What do you think?

Check out a quote from AppStorm: "Most people are going to love how easy the app is to navigate. Everybody in their right minds will love the text parser. And for some people, the app’s cross-platform compatibility makes it a winner. Zinio comes strongly recommended for anybody looking for a great way to read magazines digitally" (March 13, 2013).

Leading off our Top 5 iPhone and iPad Apps of the Week is a productivity and lifestyle app with a 95 AppScore. My.Agenda is an all-in-one organizer that combines appointments, todos, reminders and tasks. The pro reviews call it a good bang for your buck when it comes to management apps and I definitely think it would come in handy for organizing my life. Next we have three apps tied for second with a 90 AppScore. Cooking Basics is an app that does what it's title suggests. Yes this app is right up my alley, I need a 101 in cooking with simple instructions. Here the pro reviews praise it for it's simplicity and multimedia teaching experience. Another app with a 90 AppScore is The Visible City, a travel and education app about Vancouver's history. It's made by the Museum of Vancouver and the pro reviews say its augmented reality is an amazing way to experience a walking tour of the city. Our final app in second is one for little kids. The app is Little Red Riding Hood by Nosy Crow and is a choose-your-own-adventure style ebook that provides a twist on the traditional Little Red Riding Hood storyline. Kids can choose from 8 different story paths and play games embedded in the stories. I think this app could be great for my young nieces. Closing out our top list is FocusTwist with an 83 AppScore. It's a photo app that the pro reviewers say can replace the purchase of an expensive $400 Lytro camera! Say one area is in focus but not another, well you can change that even after the picture is taken. I'm not a photographer but it still sounds like a pretty cool piece of technology. There you have it, our top apps for the week. Let us know your thoughts.

I'm about to head out on a long trip abroad and will be taking planes, trains and automobiles. Really, my trip has a few legs and different flights and hotels. It's hard for me to keep track of everything. I started down the process of printing all my files. Then it occurred to me, instead of killing trees with all my printing and eventually mixing up all my papers, that there must be an app out there that can simplify all of this. And of course there is: TripIt - Travel Organizer is a travel and productivity app with an 83 AppScore and our Best Free iPhone App of the Week. The app makes it easy to keep your trip details organized, all you need to do is forward your travel information to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. I'm looking forward to sending this app all my upcoming trip information. Read more below and let us know what you think. And don't worry, I'll be writing a few blog posts from the road! Is that good or bad, hmm....

With summer around the corner, travel season is about to begin. Figuring out what to do and see can be tiring so sometimes it's good to get a little help. That's why this week's Best Free iPhone and iPad App is HISTORY Here. It's not a traditional travel app, but it has an 87 AppScore and can certainly provide a little travel guidance. To start, HISTORY Here is brought to you by the History Channel, so you know they have to have their history right! At it's core the app offers information on thousands of historic places across the United States written by the experts at the History Channel. You can read write-ups, view images and even stream video information about the locations. So how does it help with travel? Two ways. First, all the spots are available in a map view so you can check out the interesting things to see while planning your vacation. Second, if you let the app use your current location it will show you what's close by. Just looking at my own city, Los Angeles, there are a ton of things to see. The next time I travel I'm definitely going to use this app to figure out where I can step into a little history. All this for free. Pretty cool huh?

AppScores are based on aggregating and averaging independent professional review scores from around the web.

Check out what Appolicious said about the app: "While HISTORY Here is a perfect companion app when on vacation in a place you want to know more about, it can be surprisingly informative if you use it in your own backyard, too. It might not provide encyclopedic levels of insight on its points of interest but it’s a nice reference app to keep nearby" (July 26, 2012).

The Super Bowl is around the corner and I may not be into the two teams in the game but I'm definitely down with the parties. I'm thinking of hosting a party this year at my place but planning the food for a party is always a chore and I'm not a cooker. So for our Best Free iOS App of the Week I decided to look for one that could help me and found Eat24 Order Food Delivery & Takeout. It has an 87 AppScore and helps you order food from thousands of locations in over 850 cities. You can search by where you live to find restaurants near you, by cuisine and by dishes. Eat24 Order Food Delivery & Takeout also remembers where and what you have ordered in the past - savings your likes. One of the app's features that I find cool is that it offers cash back on future orders through its CashCoupon system. Also, for those that love taking pictures of their food Eat24 Order Food Delivery & Takeout allows you to do that too and share your meal to twitter. They even have live in-app chat support in case something goes wrong with your order. Pretty comprehensive. I think this app has use even beyond planning for a Super Bowl party. I mean how many times are you home and can't decide where or what to eat. I feel like this app could help you make the decision. One caveat, the app is probably best for those that live in cities although I haven't tested that to be sure. Heck, the app is free so it can't hurt to try. Read more about the app below and let us know your Super Bowl party plans!

AppScores are based on aggregating independent professional review scores from around the web and not on our opinion.

Search from wherever you are, or wherever you’re going to be when you’re ready for some food. The Eat24 app remembers your preferences, which saves you time, and gives you coupons on a regular basis, which saves you money. "

Check out what Appbite.com said about the app: "One way to solve your problem would be to go online and Google it. But now there's an easier, faster and safer way to find just the restaurant or dish you're craving for, no matter where you are. Because now, there's an app that is there for you anytime you are hungry. This is Eat24 Order Food Delivery & Takeout, and you can download it free from the AppStore" (June 15, 2012).

This week we have three apps in our Top 5 iOS App weekly series. It may only be three but I love the whole list. First we have New York: Coffee Guide with a 90 AppScore. This app might be one of my favorite apps just from the title itself. It combines two of my loves: NY and coffee. The app is a guide to all the best independent coffee places in New York, curated by an expert panel. The panel curates the list based on coffee & food quality and atmosphere. I'm definitely downloading this app for my next return home to NY and going to re-explore NY in a new way. I'm going to be a coffee tourist. Tied for second are two apps with an 83 AppScore. Twitterrific 5 for Twitter is a Twitter client that organizes tweets with a beautiful UI, custom themes and lets you direct message and browse mentions from one unified view. This app is great for all those aggressive Twitter users out there. I might need to include myself in that list. The other app in second is Sooner: to do list & weekly planner - as the title says, it's a planner and to do list app. You can manage projects, tasks and sync your to dos with iCal. There you have it, our Top iOS Apps of the Week will definitely keep my life organized and caffeniated. Read more about them below and Happy New Year!

1.
New York: Coffee Guide
New York: Coffee Guide 90
Free: iPhone

From the app description: "This ultimate guide was created to reveal New York’s best independent coffee shops, coffee houses and cafes, all serving locally roasted premium-quality speciality coffee. All Coffee(In)Touch cafes are personally selected by our expert panel, who pick out hidden gems and individual café features, then provide expert roundups. The Coffee(In)Touch Guide database is continually refreshed as experts re-review and search for the new. Evaluating by criteria such as coffee quality, dessert quality, food quality and atmosphere — they’ve built up a highly descriptive coffee map of NYC."

Check out a quote from The iPhone App Review: "Whether you’re looking for a quick cup or the next great coffee shop to check out, you NEED to download New York: Coffee Guide. Many apps that cost as much as a latte don’t offer half the features of NY:CG. This is a must-have for anyone in NYC" (December 19, 2012).

T2.
Twitterrific 5 for Twitter
Twitterrific 5 for Twitter 83
$2.99 (50% launch sale): iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (Universal)

From the app description: "Twitterrific is the award-winning, fast and elegant Twitter client that’s easy to understand and a delight to use. The unified timeline lets you browse mentions and direct messages from a single view and the new theme panel enables you to tailor the way tweets are displayed. Quickly respond to tweets, change accounts or view conversation threads with minimum effort using gestures. Robust VoiceOver support means Twitterrific is accessible for the hard of seeing on iOS."

Check out a quote from Apple’N'Apps: "Twitterrific 5 is an outstanding Twitter client for iOS that is a great alternative to the official Twitter app that focuses on outstanding design, and ease of use, and absolutely nails it. Twitterrific 5 is a must buy, though it is a brand new version, and not just an update to the existing version of Twitterrific" (December 7, 2012).

Best Free iPhone and iPad App: Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search

If you are a like me and I hope you are not :-), I do things at the last minute. Although I did get my holiday shopping done early this year, I have not booked my holiday travel. Yes I know Christmas is two weeks away! I'm certainly not lightening the holiday time stress by procrastinating on my travel plans. That is why I chose Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search with an 88 AppScore as this week's Best Free iPhone and iPad App. Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search is a travel app that tries to take the "agony" out of travel planning. The app actually filters airfare by "agony" which is a combination of price, duration and number of stops. Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search also has a different way of displaying travel search results - a timeline format that kind of looks like a gantt chart to me. I like this display style because its a good way to do immediate comparisons on flights by price or time and I'm always comparison shopping. It takes a little getting used to but I think in the long run it's a bit easier to see at a glance. Additionally, the app shows hotel search results on a map and offers heatmaps on the best areas to stay based on interests. For example, if you are foodie or a clubber it will show you the best areas for both. Now if only the app could actually physically do the planning for me and then take my place and interact with random distant cousins during the holidays then it would be the killer app of the century. Read more about the app below, let us know your thoughts and safe travels during this holiday season!

As always our AppScore rankings are based on aggregating independent professional review scores from around the web.

Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search
Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search 88
Free: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (Universal)

From the app description: "Hipmunk takes the agony out of flight & hotel search. With Hipmunk you'll see all the relevant flights on a timeline, helping you visualize the right choice. Unlike every other app out there, Hipmunk doesn't just show you the cheapest flight first — the app instead sorts by "agony," which incorporates important factors like how long you'll be traveling and how many stops you'll make. Hotel results are shown on a map so that you can see exactly where you'll be staying. You can also turn on heatmaps that will show you the best areas to stay based on unique interests like food, landmarks, nightlife and more."

Check out what AppStorm said about the app: "If you’re a frequent traveler — heck, even if you’re a once a year traveler — do yourself a favor and give the Hipmunk iPhone app a try. You won’t find a better flight search tool and I have to believe their hotel search is in the same realm" (February 7, 2012). Here is another professional thought, Appolicious: "It’s clear the developers have worked hard to improve their app and it’s an excellent way to find less agonizing flights in a world of airport delays and spiraling flight costs. The extra hotel search capability just adds another extra dimension of usefulness" (February 15, 2012).

We have some fun apps for you in our weekly Top 5 iPhone and iPad Apps. While only four non-games met our criteria this week, they have a broad range from kids apps to a photo app to a language app. Leading of our list with an 88 AppScore is Toca Tailor, it's an app for kids that lets them dress up characters in different outfits - mixing and matching prints, colors and fabrics. It has some game elements but makes the list based on its focus on creativity, kids, official App Store categories and AppScore. In second with an 87 AppScore is Alt Photo, the app stylizes your photos with tons of filters and lets you easily share them to multiple social networks. I love how there are apps today that can make us all feel like professional photographers. Next up in third with an 84 AppScore, Languages is an app that offers language translations without the need of an internet connection. The app seems like it would be great on international trips when it's hard to find WIFI. I wish I'd had it over the summer. Finishing off our list with a 75 AppScore is My Monster Mayhem, an interactive storybook for kids featuring a strong little girl battling imaginary monsters in her house. Looks like quite the tale. There you have it, our top apps of the week list. Of course find out more about them below and let us know what you think.

Fill in Your Travel Gaps with Fog of World

Fog of World is one of the more unique and simple apps we've come across lately. It's one of those "Cool, why didn't I think of that?" things. The name is a play on the military term "Fog of War" but its function is decidedly non-military: travel. What does it do? Well, at its simplest it shows you where you've been and where you haven't using the GPS in your iPhone or iPad. Specifically, it pulls the iOS map into the app and layers a translucent cloud over it. Then parts of the cloud are removed as you travel around the world. I don't mean travel around the world in the app, I mean as you physically walk, run, drive, fly and so on around the world it uncovers the map for you. It also bills itself as a game with achievements for places visited. For me personally though, the coolest use I can think of for Fog of World is to use it to discover new places in your home town. Maybe there's a street you've never been down or a park you've never set foot in. I imagine there's a ton of places in my own neighborhood that I've never seen and maybe this will help me find those areas. In the end I definitely like the concept and as for the quality of the app, at AppMyWorld we always leave that up to the AppScore and currently Fog of World has a 75. So check out more below, visit the app page for the full story and let us know if you try it out.

As always our AppScore rankings are based on aggregating independent professional review scores from around the web.

Fog of World
Fog of World 75
$4.99: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (Universal)

From the app description: "Fog of World is a real-life game that you need to remove the fog on the map by exploring around the world. It's a fantastic way to find out where you have and haven't been in your lifetime."

Here are some professional thoughts on the app: AppStorm said "I didn’t need the badges to make Fog of World a lot of fun for me. It adds a sense of discovery to all the old places you visit every day. The first few days I was using the app, I found myself excitedly checking my map every evening to see what I’d uncovered, even if I’d only been to work and back" (October 30, 2012).
