Last week Apple announced their 2013 App Design Awards Winners and we thought it'd be a good idea to see what the pro reviews say about each winner. The data shows AppScores range from 97 to 83 and include two apps which we don't yet have AppScores for. The list includes games, utilities, weather apps, art/creative apps, to-do apps, web development apps, education apps, productivity apps and photo apps and covers the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Mac. It also includes two winners in the student category. We've listed them in order of AppScore to make browsing easier. For full details, be sure to click on each app's name to see quotes from and links to all the reviews that make up the AppScore. So, without further adieu, here's what the pro reviews have to say about Apple's winners:

AppScore rankings are based on aggregating professional review scores from around the web.

We have exactly five games in our Top 5 iPhone and iPad Games of the Week series this week. Our first game provides a bit of that Vegas experience. Las Vegas! leads off the list with an 82 AppScore and is based on a board game nominated for the 2012 German Game of the Year. The pro reviews commend it for its casual gameplay saying it's easy to learn, easy to play and family friendly. Next we have two games tied for second with an 81 AppScore: Tasty Tadpoles is a puzzle game that the pro reviews say is cute, simple and good for all ages and Dash & Bash, which the pro reviews also say is good for a wide range of ages, is a racing game featuring ducks that you can make swim, fly, dive and shoot. In fourth we another have a tie - this time two games have an 80 AppScore. One is Mosaique, a puzzle game about arranging and clearing tiles of matching color. As simple as it sounds, one pro review says it will require a chess-master mind. Play at your own mind-bending / time sucking risk is what I say. Our other game in fourth is Go Home Dinosaurs, a tower defense game where the goal is to prevent dinosaurs from crashing your party. It's kind of a casual take on the genre and the pro reviews praise it as a well executed game all around. Hope you enjoyed learning about our Top 5 iPhone and iPad Games and come back again next week for another set. Any feedback? Let us know below.

From the app description: "Las Vegas combines simple gameplay with challenging strategy for a motivating, addictive gaming experience. Once you have started a game, you’ll want to play second round, then another… and another. The digital version of the game has been given a new look, and sets the player in the middle of the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. The clatter of slot machines and jazzy tunes provide a typical casino atmosphere."

Check out a quote from 148Apps: "I may not have much experience with the board game, but the iOS version of Las Vegas is a joy to play. It’s easy to learn the basics, every bit as easy to play, and lots of fun win or lose. Unless someone has an aversion to fun, I’d say this is a safe bet" (May 9, 2013).

T2.
Tasty Tadpoles
Tasty Tadpoles 81
$0.99: iPhone, iPod touch & iPad (Universal)

From the app description: "Tasty Tadpoles is a deliciously addictive trial of survival, available now on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Tap your tenacious tadpole triumphantly through three puzzling ponds of peril. You'll need fast fingers to flash past the fleet green tadpoles, a keen sense of cunning and craftiness to overcome the territorial yellow tadpoles along with tremendous timing and precision poking to swim under those tedious turtles. If push comes to shove you can always eliminate these eclectic enemies with the zap of an electric eel!"

Check out a quote from Slide To Play: "Tasty Tadpoles offers an enjoyable experience that should sate the hunger of most puzzle fans. Forget swapping blocks and shiny baubles: Save the tadpoles" (May 17, 2013).

T2.
Dash & Bash
Dash & Bash 81
$0.99: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (Universal)

From the app description: "Have you got the skills to be the champion and win all of the gold trophies? The current champion Bash and his minions have filled the race tracks with a range of dangerous obstacles designed to ruin your race. Avoid obstacles and eat juicy fruit to speed up until Dash reaches top speed and transforms into Super Dash! Follow the rivalry between Dash and Bash in the comic strips between chapters."

Check out a quote from AppAdvice: "This is definitely a cute little racing game that is great for kids of all ages (including adults). It’s easy to pick up and play, and put back down without getting too addicted. I just wish that the controls were a bit easier, because it’s a bit weird to have one thumb up high on the screen, and the other in a normal spot" (May 6, 2013).

This week Youda Survivor 2 HD with an 85 AppScore leads off our Top 5 iPhone and iPad Games of the Week. It's a time management game with a bit of adventure and story thrown in and the pro reviews say it's a worthy sequel to the original. Next we have three games tied for second at an 83 AppScore. LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes is basically a console game made for iOS. Given that, the pro reviews praise its ton of content and level of polish. Also in second, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is a strategy game that takes place in the skies over Europe during WWI. If you've never heard of Sid Meier before, he's the mastermind behind a ton of console and PC games most notably the Civilization series. His involvement is certainly a positive for the game. The last game tied for second is Robot Unicorn Attack 2, an endless runner of sorts featuring, you guessed it, a unicorn. It comes from the crazy creative minds of [Adult Swim] so you know it's going to be pretty unusual and the pro reviews indicate as such. Our fifth place and final game this week is Mr. Runner 2: The Masks with an 82 AppScore. It is also an endless runner and the pro reviews call it "strange" and "unique" in a good way saying it's a refreshing take on the genre. There you have it, five games for your iPhone or iPad. It's Wednesday so we're back with our Top 5 iPhone and iPad Games of the Week series and this time four games, including an HD and non-HD version of one game, met our criteria. Our first place game is Cut the Rope: Time Travel with an 85 AppScore. I'd guess that most of you have heard of the Cut the Rope series before considering it's been downloaded over 250 million times, but if not, a quick refresher. They are puzzlers where you have to use physics such as rope swinging to guide candy to a cuddly little monster. The concept and gameplay in Time Travel are consistent with the series, so definitely check this one out if you liked the other Cut the Rope games. In second we have the iPad version, Cut the Rope: Time Travel HD, with an 84 AppScore. It's $2 more than the iPhone version but the bigger screen can make it easier on the eyes. Up next with an 83 AppScore we have two games tied for third. They Need To Be Fed 2 is a sequel to the 85 AppScore They Need To Be Fed and is a running, jumping and flying platformer that romps through seven worlds and 50+ levels. The pro reviews praise it as a great game whether you like platformers or not. Hatcher is our other game tied for third. It bills itself as a online strategy game where you build an army to compete with other players for control of the world. Its management and multiplayer aspects are praised by the pro reviews so if you're into strategy games, this one's for you. Well, that's it for our list this week. If you have any thoughts, let us know in the comments below!

Cut the Rope: Time Travel
Cut the Rope: Time Travel 85

From the app description: "A sci-fi noir adventure in the tradition of "Join Om Nom as he travels back in time to feed his ancestors with candy. Cut the Rope: Time Travel is a completely new adventure filled with time-traveling, candy-crunching, physics-based action! With two cute monsters to feed in each level, Cut the Rope: Time Travel is twice the fun but familiar to play. If you like Cut the Rope, you’ll love Cut the Rope: Time Travel!"

Check out a quote from Gamezebo: "Even though the game is a little bit too easy for my taste, Cut the Rope: Time Travel is still the perfect follow-up to Cut the Rope and Cut the Rope: Experiments, and a real lesson in how to make a sequel and how to make it right" (April 19, 2013).

2.
Cut the Rope: Time Travel HD
Cut the Rope: Time Travel HD 84

The iPad version of the game.

Check out a quote from touchArcade: "You might be tempted to skip Cut the Rope: Time Travel. It's just another sequel, right? Nope. Time Travel offers a unique twist on an already solid formula. It's an excellent time waster, one that every member of your family should enjoy" (April 26, 2013).

So this week only four games met the criteria for our Top 5 iPhone and iPad Games series and two of them tied for first with an 87 AppScore. Gemini Rue is a sci-fi adventure that was originally made for the PC. It's in the mold of a classic point-and-click game but redone for iOS. Personally, I like the way it reminds me of old childhood standbys like King's Quest and Space Quest. TouchMii is our other game tied for first this week. It's actually a collection of mini-games and the pro reviews say it's a great time waster that will keep you busy striving for Game Center achievements. Next we have another tie, this time two games in third with an 80 AppScore. Bottle Cap Blitz is a 60 second race against time where you fire bottle caps to blast cubes. With power-ups mixed in, some of the pro reviews compare it to Fruit Ninja and I'd say it's an accurate comparison by the looks of the screenshots and the app description. Plus, Fruit Ninja is no slouch to be compared to. Next, Mr. Crab, also tied for third, is an arcade game where you have to jump your way to the top. Essentially you are a crab, surprise surprise, you start at the bottom of a level and you have to jump/climb your way to the top while rescuing baby crabs and avoiding enemies along the way. It sounds simple, but reading the pro reviews it's pretty apparent the difficulty level ramps up and the game becomes a major accomplishment to finish. So there you go, four games in our list this week. Let us know what you think!

Check out a quote from TouchGen: "A superb blend of classic point & click and neo noir, Gemini Rue is among the best adventuring choices on iOS" (April 17, 2013).
