Those who are looking for yet another skating game that makes it easy to soar through the air and hop from rail to rail will want to avoid True Skate, but anyone who is comfortable with failing more often than not has found one of the most rewarding games we’ve come across in the App Store. With a nearly flawless game engine and an endlessly-updateable environment, True Axis has devised True Skate to become one of those App Store mainstays that don’t come around very often… Download it now and get practicing–you’re going to need it. I’ve topped the leaderboards and have unlocked every achievement. I’ve put hours into this game and now that I’m done reviewing it, guess what I’m going to do next? Play some more. Whether you’re a fan of skateboarding or not, True Skate is simply a blast to play. Date: October 20, 2012

True Skate is clearly something special. It feels like the kind of game that our touchscreen devices were made for, and looks gorgeous to boot. If you're into skateboarding already I'll just tell you flat out: buy this game, you will fall in love. If you're not heavily into skating then chances are you'll like True Skate a lot too, as long as the lack of structured goals isn't a deal-breaker for you. For me, it's the sheer act of playing that keeps me coming back, and players in our forums have been loving it as well. I have no doubt that True Skate already bests all other skating games on iOS, and has the potential to grow well beyond its stellar foundation. Date: October 17, 2012

It might take a while to learn even the basics, but True Skate is a game about precision and practice that offers the greatest rewards to those who put in the hard work. Date: October 18, 2012

There’s much to be praised when it comes to True Skate from the control scheme, camera, graphics, to even the layout of the skatepark. Heck there’s even missions that put your skateboarding to the test. There is a downside to this, as of right now there’s only one skatepark. So after a weeks span with True Skate the park is starting to reach its limits and I’m starting to want more. While there’s only one skatepark to explore at the moment…I’ll take it since it’s the most entertaining skateboarding sim out there. Date: October 24, 2012

True Skate is a marvel showcasing what can only be done on a touch screen, a game that mimics the real life activity closely. You can develop your skills, or just skate about grinding rails. A lack of content, and a bit tedious missions draws the final impression down. Still it is one of those showcase games that every iOS owner should try, and show off to those less fortunate Android owners. Date: October 19, 2012

It's a pretty impressive package. What's missing from making it truly epic is... well, more. The skatepark is great, but it would be hard to imagine any skater wouldn't want a change of scenery every once in a while. Expression is such a big part of the culture that the game is practically screaming out for customization of your board, and some music to ride to might also be nice. Regardless, True Axis likely has another hit on its hands. True Skate makes you feel like you can really skate, and at least for this writer, that's quite the accomplishment. I wonder if my mom ever threw out my old board... Date: October 18, 2012

True Skate walks a thin line between simulation and sandbox, producing a very realistic skating title, but falling short of providing players with decent objectives outside of 'mucking about'. Date: October 18, 2012

True Skate is one of the most deluxe and authentic simulators of any real world activity that offers an amazing physics engine, beautiful 3D design, and outstanding touch controls. The app could use some more features, but anyone can thoroughly enjoy performing amazing skateboard tricks with their fingertips making it a should buy. Date: October 18, 2012

If you are a fan of fingerboards or just love skateboarding, you’ll enjoy this game. It is a little overpriced, but skateboarders will consider it worth the money. It would be nice to include the option to play songs from your device’s music library, but at least you are not subjected to someone else’s idea of what skater music is. Date: October 18, 2012

Overall, True Skate is a stunningly good looking game that comes incredibly close to recreating the feel of real skateboarding. There might not be a lot to do, but it does provide for a good time. Date: October 18, 2012

It might be a little thin around the edges, but True Skate will keep players engaged with the beautiful physics, and the inherent difficulty of pulling off a perfect trick in-game: I’ve never played a game, console or handheld, that recreated the feeling of its real-life counterpoint as well as True Skate does. A perfect game for any skateboarding enthusiast or fan, whether skilled at pulling of hard flips and 5-0 grinds, or uncoordinated in the art of carving concrete. Date: October 22, 2012

In many ways, True Skate represents the very best of what can be achieved with mobile gaming. It makes a virtue out of touchscreen controls, rather than a burden, and it's hard to see how any traditional controller could provide a more tactile and intuitive feel for the skate experience. It's a playground for you to lose yourself in for five minutes on the morning train, or five hours at home. At $1.99 it's still great value for money, and a reminder that you very often get exactly what you pay for on the App Store. Date: October 25, 2012

The downside, however, lies in the amount of screen area needed to properly play this game. While I tested this game on my iPhone 4S, I found the screen a tad to small to play with. Granted, the game loaded and played out smoothly without much hiccups but the 3.5 inch display was definitely not enough real estate for my fingers to roam around freely. I highly doubt the iPhone 5, despite the slightly larger screen, would fare any better too for the game is just too awkward to play out on such a small surface. However, the game works wonders on the iPad, given the large real estate for your fingers to travel across. While not exactly a favorite of mine for the smaller iOS devices, this one is definitely a hit with the iPad. Date: November 28, 2012

While True Skate takes a decidedly realistic spin on performing kickflips and ollies on iOS, the skateboarding sim is missing some of the game mechanics that would take it from an average experience to a compelling one. Skate if you must, but we’re hoping they use this platform for bigger and better things. Date: October 23, 2012

True Skate has the makings of an awesome game: the graphics are great, it has lot of missions, and a whole bunch of neat tricks to perform. But the controls are annoying, the game is tough, and nothing really changes. As it stands, True Skate is a bit like Topia World Builder. It’s basically just a pretty toy with not a lot of depth. Don’t get me wrong, True Skate has its moments of gleeful tricking, but the dodgy controls and lack of depth stop the game from being anything other than a skateboarding time-waster. Date: January 17, 2013

In the end, True Skate feels like it fails to deliver. It’s got great graphics, mission, and hell, even a nice, realistic approach to skateboarding for the first time on iOS. However, that is what puts the nail in it’s coffin. The controls, and game overall, it hard. I can’t wait to see what comes next from True Axis (here’s hoping for Jet Car Stunts 2), but unfortunately, I can’t recommend True Skate. Date: November 07, 2012
