If I could really find a complaint, and there’s barely any here to be honest, it’s the menu system. It can be a bit confusing at first, and there’s no real main menu to go back to. Also when you load the game up it throws you straight into the action, which can be refreshing for experienced gamers like myself but a little daunting for the younger or uncertain gamers out there playing for the first time. Having said that, Stunt Star: The Hollywood Years is a true gem of a title. It combines cunning puzzle solving with simple game mechanics and an enjoyable presentation that, while seemingly too simple at first, shows extra layers of complexity and neat little touches as you progress. This game is entertaining and a decent blend of challenge, trial and error, and fun … at least until I got stuck on level 2:21 and couldn’t progress any further. The level in question involves negotiating a near vertical hill, with a finish flag attached to a ceiling of rock above the summit. In theory (and according to the people behind the game) you have to hang your vehicle’s wheels over the lip of a ramp in order to complete the course. I didn’t manage that and I tried it a lot, and I mean a LOT, with every vehicle in the game and every conceivable combination of consumable power-ups. The alternative suggestion was to buy the IAP to skip levels. Sorry, I don’t go along with that reasoning. If a level is too hard to complete then it needs to be adjusted to make it easier to complete – the player should not be forced to buy an IAP to skip levels just to reach, what, even harder levels? The whole thing reminds me of a of Chevy Chase or Bill Murray movie in the 80′s. If you’re a younger reader, that’s a good thing. Believe me. Also a good thing is that screeching to a halt just before the last flag to successfully complete a stunt – especially one of the trickier ones – is actually quite satisfying. It’s pretty much all you could ask for in a game like this which probably has hundreds of relatives in the AppStore. Go then, strap on your helmet, rev your engine, and try not to fall into a canyon.
