IMPORTANT! The Adventures of Retrobot does NOT support on iPhone 3GS and older, iPod 3rd gen and older or iPad 1.

The Adventures of Retrobot mixes tank shooter gameplay and fantastic boss battles with a full one hundred panel comic book. The gameplay features strategic elements like an EMP blast and a health recharging shield. Tons of over-the-top action is fused with a comedy story holding an abundance of jokes referring to classic videogames, as well as videogame logic.

Story
In 2025, humanity has shifted menial tasks to a network of automated robots. In the small town of Fairfax, Arizona, we find Retrobot, a hand-built robot and hero of our story. He has been created by Spencer, a socially handicaped genius, 32 years of age, and still living with his grandmother. Retrobot was built to handle all work, but is mainly used for one thing: playing co-op online videogames with his master and creator. After a big server crash, an army of automated robots takes control of the world. They come and kidnap Spencer, who’s robot building skills are deemed a threat to their domination. Together with Toto, Spencer’s pet monkey, Retrobot rolls out into the world in an attempt to find and return his master.

It’s pretty cool that Endeavor Bros put in place so much attention to detail in this game, creating a really good experience both on part of the gameplay and in the story. Date: September 27, 2012

The two major fixes this game needs are technical: the controls need to be either changed or alternative controls should be offered, and the autosave bug should be fixed. Ultimately, it’s too bad that there a technical features holding this game back. If those issues weren’t there, we would be too busy chuckling at the cutscenes and joking about it amongst ourselves to write a review. Date: September 21, 2012

Levels can also get samey after a while– left to right scroll, shoot enemies, here comes a boss. I know our industry has survived a quarter of a century with games following the same basic template, but I’m just saying. So it’s not perfect, but it is immaculately presented as well as self-aware. The storyline also adds to the appeal as it’s clear that the developers actually care enough about the plot to infuse a bit of pathos where so many shooters can’t be bothered. The humour might not always come off, but when one of the bosses challenges you to see if you can get past him and his balls, you realise that Retrobot deserves a place in gaming history because those lines deserve to be immortalized. I’m sure Endeavor Bros would agree. Date: September 17, 2012

Priced at $2.99, I think there’s too many frustrating issues, and with the lack of GameCenter, you might want to wait until there’s an update that deals with the data issues before you think about picking it up, and given the large spaces between updates when it came to 6th Planet, there’s a pretty large possibility that these issues will not be dealt with any time soon, which is a damn shame. Hopefully Monkube, Ape Entertainment and Endeavor Bros can give Retrobot the attention it deserves, and bring out it’s full potential in the near future. Date: September 20, 2012

Retrobot sports a funny and sweet story but it didn’t hook me in the end. The game is visually magnificent, but the unfortunate control placement creates some frustration and file size is shockingly large. Boss fights are fun and there’s a monkey but a save bug really took me out of this one. Overall, Retrobot is a good game to pick up and play for that price, but it won’t stay on your device after you’re done with it. Date: September 24, 2012
