How does Max Payne Mobile compare to the PC original? Well, it looks exactly the same. Completely. A total port of the game, from old PC to modern iPad and iPhone. How does the game stand in the current iPad world? Graphically and in gameplay it is probably below some other blockbuster games. But this is a “real” game. With a solid plot, both in gameplay and as side stories go. I don’t think there is another game today in the App Store fulfilling these premises, making Max Payne Mobile the best shooter around. What few problems this port has-- the controls, iPad 3 frame rate, and other minor flaws-- aren't enough to diminish our enjoyment of Max Payne Mobile. In fact, the story was even better than we remember it, with several surprising twists and betrayals. Max Payne Mobile is an impressive achievement on iOS, with memorable shootouts and a gripping story. Download it for when those cold nights in the uncaring city start to eat away at your very soul. Time hasn't dulled Max Payne's wit and explosive action by any appreciable amount - given how stable, fast and easy to play it is on the iPhone, there's no reason not to grab and enjoy (or replay) this classic shooter. Date: April 12, 2012

I love shooters, but haven’t enjoyed many of the ones available in the App Store. Whether they were too buggy, or the controls were too complex, I never truly enjoyed one. With Max Payne Mobile, I have loved every minute of play. Lots of action, along with easy controls, and memories of my teenage years has made playing an awesome experience. Date: April 12, 2012

Max Payne really is a game of the past, many of us would have forgotten about it but now it’s back I really see old fans returning to play again and the game will most definitely attract new fans. I for one can’t wait to sit and play it all the way through and I’d highly recommend it to anyone – even if you’re not a big gamer. Date: April 12, 2012

I’ll be the first to admit that I was super stoked about Max Payne coming to iOS. It was a game I loved on the PC 11 years ago, and I wanted to see how rose the colored glasses were. The answer is, surprisingly, not that rose. While it looks old, and has virtual joysticks, Max Payne is every bit the great game it was 11 years ago. I wish Rockstar had put more love into the port, but for costing me 1/25th of the original game, I’ll cut them some budgetary slack. Date: April 13, 2012

There is easily 15 hours of gameplay here, more when you finish the story and for the price of $3, this really is a must buy and a universal app too. A classic game, brought to iOS with a lot of care and attention, Max Payne Mobile is brilliant. A few irritations persist, but this has to be one of the best action games on iPhone, with an excellent story, explosive action and great Bullet Time moments to remember. Date: April 11, 2012

Fans of the console original will be drawn right back into the dark, gritty world of New York City, and other adults who haven’t should: the experience is incomparable, and with multiple difficulties to play on, there’s plenty of excuses to revisit it over and over again. Max Payne Mobile is as engrossing and awesome as its predecessor, showing its age technically, but also a reminder of how creative storytelling can be done right in a video game. Date: May 01, 2012

Porting over Max Payne is an amazing feat and we’re more than happy to once again play the king of Bullet Time again on the iPad. Although it’s a great port overall, the less-than-stellar controls dampen an otherwise enjoyable experience. Date: April 17, 2012

Not every title from the early 2000s has stood the test of time, but Max Payne Mobile’s fantastic presentation and storytelling keep it a must-have for action junkies looking for a serious game on iOS. It might not look or control as well as it did over a decade ago, but much like the hundreds of mobsters and bullet wounds you’ll encounter over your 10 to 15 hour adventure, it won’t stop Max Payne from emerging successful. Max Payne Mobile isn’t for everyone simply because of the story and style, but is a great addition to the App Store. There’s so much to enjoy, and the port is very well done to fit iOS nicely making it a should buy. Date: April 16, 2012

Max Payne, then, overcomes the perils of aged graphics and gameplay because the more interesting elements help to keep it fresh and unique. It still remains an excellent game and one that is well worth playing through or, if you played it the first time, revisiting. Date: May 09, 2012

On that note, although we weren't as blown away with Max Payne as we were with Rockstar's previous release, Grand Theft Auto 3, it's still a worthwhile addition to your App Store collection, and serves as one of the more mature titles you can play. Plus, the inclusion of Max Payne 3 content helps put the series in perspective. With this in mind, bring on Max Payne 2. Date: April 12, 2012

The controls make me question the future of such extraordinary titles on iOS devices. Rockstar Games has clearly done everything possible to make them work but there’s still that sense that this would all be so much easier with a physical controller. Work through that and Max Payne Mobile is as enjoyable as it was 11 years ago. Priced at $2.99, it’s a bargain, but don’t mistake that for perfection. Date: April 16, 2012

Despite its primitive graphics, Max Payne Mobile can hold its own against any action game out there, making it a must-have for hardcore gamers who play on their iOS device(s). Date: April 25, 2012

Max Payne for iOS is a good game. It has the potential to be a great game, but is hampered by some pretty weak controls. If you compare the fluid, accurate controls of a game like Mass Effect to Max Payne, the difference is highly visible. It is still worth playing for the awesome story and fun gameplay, but it is not nearly as good as it could have been if they had nailed the controls. Date: April 30, 2012

I think to see the value of this game you have to understanding who it is for. If what you are after is a third person shoot-fest, with slow-mo shoot outs and multiplayer, you might want to check out a game called 9mm. But if what you are looking for is a longer, story-driven, single-player, moody journey, still with plenty of bullets, then Max Payne will deliver. Date: May 03, 2012

Max Payne Mobile pays tribute to the original, and if you have never played the original you owe it to yourself to give it a go. It is by no means a perfect game, and you will get annoyed with Max spastically drying to jump, or getting stuck on something. Still it is an important piece of gaming history, and despite the flaws it is highly enjoyable due to a great story, amazing voice acting and relentless action. Date: May 12, 2012

The choice of whether or not you want to get involved with Max Payne Mobile ultimately rests on your past experience with the franchise. If you already know how great the story and gameplay of the original were and just want to carry a semblance of that in your pocket—this is your game. If you’re looking for a standalone shooter specifically designed to perform wonderfully on a touch-screen device, then I’ll be honest, I think the App Store has better to offer. Date: May 18, 2012

For three bucks, Max Payne isn’t too much of a gamble for those who grew up with previous versions of the game. However, the controls aren’t as great as they could’ve been, despite the option to move them around however you please. Try it first if you can. Otherwise, take a couple of Flinstones chewable vitamins and enjoy. Date: April 19, 2012

Max Payne Mobile's repetitive gameplay and irksome controls definitely won't impress newcomers. But for gamers who enjoyed the original, this iOS edition is a strong enough port to bring back good memories. Date: April 13, 2012

For a game that defined itself by making you feel like a cold-blooded killer thanks to its accurate controls and great bullet time mechanic, Max Payne’s iOS port is disappointing. The wealth of control options is impressive, but they don’t do enough to combat the inherent clumsiness of the virtual sticks and buttons. The narrative of Max Payne still holds up, but the touch-screen shooting doesn’t. Date: April 17, 2012
