Description

87 Long ago, a great Dragonmaster named Dyne, with the aid of his faithful companions, defended the goddess Althena from a terrible evil. Time has passed, and those great adventurers have become the stuff of legend, but the world of Lunar is now threatened by a shadowy figure known as the Magic Emperor. In a humble village, far removed from the turmoil, lives a young man named Alex. Idolizing the legendary Dyne, Alex dreams of one day becoming a renowned Dragonmaster and matching the achievements of his lifelong hero. Encouraged by his childhood friend Ramus, Alex sets out with his companion Nall and his adopted sister Luna on a seemingly trivial quest, unaware that it would prove to be the first step in an epic adventure whose outcome will determine the fate of the entire world.

Following the critically-acclaimed iOS port of the Japanese roleplaying game Vay, SoMoGa has returned to bring you Lunar: Silver Star Story, now with numerous enhancements for iOS! A traditional, turn-based Japanese RPG, this port offers:

- Nearly a full hour of animated cut scenes
- Remastered soundtrack with high quality music and voice tracks
- A completely updated interface designed specifically for iOS
devices, including an onscreen joypad

- And much more!

Lunar sets the stage for a world of fairly standard fantasy, magic, and dragons, and if you're a genre vet it may be hard to convince yourself to give into yet another similar adventure. But there's a reason we return to classics like these, and in this case it's all about the enduring personality and timeless charm. It may take a while to become acclimated to its touch system, but Lunar vets and RPG junkies alike should set some time aside for this hidden gem that's only gotten better with age. With more than 60 hours of gameplay, and production values out the wazoo, Lunar: Silver Star Story Touch easily creams any RPG ever designed as an original game for iOS straight up. If you’ve never played Lunar before, then you truly owe it to yourself to experience the splendor of the games’ package at least once (and now you won’t have to spend 60 hours in front of your TV to do so). For those of you who already experienced the game back in the day, I promise you that the game is just as much fun now as it was back then (possibly even more so now that Working Designs’ patience trying ‘fixes’ are all gone). There is, of course, the issue of whether or not you want to play a long turn-based RPG on a mobile device. I won’t claim that the control scheme here – good though it may be – is on par with using a physical controller, but it’s still very solid. Your fingers will inevitably cramp during long play sessions, but all in all Lunar Silver Star Story Touch is an impressive facsimile of the console classic. Date: September 22, 2012

Now, even if they don’t tweak them, the controls are decent enough to get you through the game, and if you’re willing to sink in some time learning how to navigate the menus, and figure out how everything in the game works, you’ll be rewarded handsomely with one of the best RPG experiences available on any gaming platform. Lunar was a standout game back in the mid-90’s, and it’s held up incredibly well over the years. All of this makes Lunar very easy to recommend, even with the control issues. Date: September 22, 2012

Like so many games these days, Lunar: Silver Star Story Touch hit the App Store with some some obvious flaws. The ultimate question isn't what it might become, but whether it can be recommended as-is. The short answer is "yes." Date: September 28, 2012

As has been the case with Square Enix’s re-releases of classic JRPGs, it’s great to see titles like Lunar Silver Star Story Touch come to iOS. Even better, there’s no sign of awkward in-app purchases, it’s just all here at a good price and demonstrating just how great the genre can be. An Universal build is the icing on the cake. Lunar: Silver Star Story Touch is a charming JRPG with plenty of nice touches and an enjoyable story, but it's tarnished a little by poor controls. Date: September 26, 2012

The poor technical implementation aside, I still think Lunar is a great game. This just doesn’t like the way it was originally intended to play. While some games feel as if they have truly come into their own on iOS, this just isn’t one of them. If you don’t have another way to experience Lunar, don’t let my issues dissuade you from experiencing this renowned title. Date: October 01, 2012
