If you call yourself a gamebook adventure fan and you don’t have Blood of the Zombies, I’m hereby revoking your theoretical membership to the fan club. If you’ve somehow never managed to delve into the Choose Your Own Adventure genre, this might just be the best place to start. I haven’t gotten to the “good” ending yet, but I’ve certainly enjoyed all the time I’ve spent trying. I can’t wait to see what both Tin Man Games and Ian Livingstone have in store for us next (there will be a next time, I presume). Date: November 29, 2012

Previous apps from Tin Man have always been smooth and highly usable, and this is no exception. In the past I’ve found their game system a little clunky, and the limited bookmark system they usually employ a slightly fake way of adding difficulty. But Blood of the Zombies changes all that; its speedy combat and inbuilt adversity make it a great candidate for the app treatment. A skilled app designer and an experienced author have collaborated and managed the rare feat of creating something greater than the sum of their individual talents. Date: October 18, 2012

The writing in Blood of the Zombies is solid if not the sort that will keep you up in night, something that may or may not come as a disappointment to some. That said, the relative bloodlessness of, well, Blood of the Zombies can make it the perfect method to introduce 'choose-your-own-adventure' games to a younger individual. Beautifully presented, a little campy but oh-so-worth that walk down memory lane, Blood of the Zombies will not go amiss in your library of interactive iOS-based tales. Date: October 26, 2012

I didn’t find the story in Blood of the Zombies compelling enough to beat my head against it in attempt to reach the ending. The game clearly values luck and learning through failure over the player’s intuition and awareness. Other game books provide the player with more interesting choices, encounters, and motives. Don’t misunderstand my criticism as a misunderstanding of game books, when they begin to feel unfair or arbitrary it is easy to accuse the format of being archaic. I happen to think that game books can be exciting when you aren’t constantly jumping back to the last bookmark. Date: November 10, 2012
